Unit 4 - Earth's Changing Surface & Landscapes
(the topic order in this unit may change)
Earth's surface (the LANDSCAPE) is constantly changing as a result of UPLIFT, WEATHERING, EROSION, and DEPOSITION. We've already covered all of these topics to some extent, but Unit 4 will cover them in a bit more detail.
There are 6 basic topics that will be covered in this unit
Topic 4A: River systems and drainage basins
By the end of topic 4A, you should
- be able to identify a drainage basin/watershed
- recognize common drainage/river system patterns
- recognize stream gradient profiles
- review how deposition will be controlled along the stream gradient profile
- be able to determine (once again) the sediment type that will be transported at various stream velocities
- recognize (once again) sediment depositional patterns associated with streams -- sorted and layered
Topic 4B: Glaciers
By the end of topic 4B, you should:
- know the difference between continental and alpine/mountain/valley glaciers.
- be able to describe how different proportions of accumulation and melting (ablation) will control the size and extent of the glacier.
- know that glacial ice is always flowing downhill
- recognize the common small scale evidence left behind by glaciation:
-
- striations, erratics, polished bedrock, etc
- identify the large scale erosional and depositional remains from a glacier
-
- erosional: aretes, horns, tarns, etc
- depositional: drumlins, kettle lakes, eskers, terminal and recessional moraines
- recognize the sediment depositional patterns associated with glacial deposits (unsorted and un-layered)
Topic 4C: Groundwater
By the end of topic 4C, you should know:
- Porosity
- Permeability
- Capillary Action
Topic 4D: Mass Wasting
By the end of topic 4D, you should know:
- demonstrate how gravity influences mass wasting.
- identify various forms of mass wasting
-
- landslides, mudslides/mudflows, creep, slump, etc
Topic 4E: Wind/Deserts/Beaches
By the end of topic 4E, you should know:
- the differences between leeward and windward sides of sand dunes.
- know how wind influences sand dune migration
- identify the likely direction of long shore drift on beaches
Topic 4F: Soil
By the end of topic 4F, you should know:
- the difference between residual and transported soils
